Missionary Service at KICY
KICY volunteers are encouraged to try ‘a little of everything’ in their time of service. All staff members are assigned on-air shifts. There are morning shows on both the AM and FM with a lot of interactive participation with our listeners.
Most staff are also involved in the selection of music, either for the AM’s Southern Gospel format, local Native singing or Russian music or for the FM’s Contemporary Christian format. This includes auditioning new releases, entering the music into our programming system, following the trade publications and seeking new material from record labels.
KICY volunteers also write and produce commercials, Public Service Announcements, Promotional Messages, and God Spots.
Travel to area villages is especially rewarding. KICY staff records and broadcasts Get-Togethers and Church Conferences, and have often covered sports during the Iditarod and basketball season. Villages visited in the past few years include Unalakleet, Koyuk, Mountain Village, Shaktoolik, White Mountain, Savoonga, Shishmaref, Wales, and Scammon Bay.
As staffing has allowed, we have traveled to villages for Listener Appreciation Dinners. This is where the entire KICY staff travels to the village, prepares a free spaghetti dinner in the school cafeteria and hosts a sing-along in the local church. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet our listeners, share a meal and worship with them.
